Where is teos

It was repaired several times during Roman times but several earthquakes took their toll. Walking along the paved road of Teos your eye is caught by a column capital here, and a water conduit there. Five hundred meters to the northwest you can discover Hellenistic walls, a theater, acropolis and gymnasium. Inscriptions found here reveal that the gymnasium had three classes and three teachers, two for sport and one for music.

Looking south from the gymnasium you see a tiny jetty with rowing boats. This is the remains of the ancient breakwater of the South Harbor. Another alternative is the ancient Myonnessos. To reach this island, so generously blessed with names for such a small place, you must return along the road to Seferihisar and head south.

Hekataios of Miletus described Myonnessos as a town in the 6th century BC and it is thought to have subsequently become a pirate stronghold recalled in the name Korsan Adasi, Pirates Island. The only remains from the archaic period is a meters piece of wall on the northwest side.

The other ruins and cisterns date from Seljuk and Ottoman times. To see the island at closer quarters you do not need to take a boat, but can walk along the 80 meter long ancient submerged pier lying centimeters beneath the surface of the water.

Teos was ruled first by Lydia and then Persia. Founded in BC, Teos was one of the 12 cities in antique Ionia. It is also known as the city of Dionysus, the god of wine in mythology. Teos is also the city of artists, where the first players' guild was formed in history. The ruins of the ancient coastal city Teos are today near the village of Sigacik in Seferihisar town, Izmir.

According to the city's history, Herodotus listed this city among 12 Ionian cities. Places to be visited include the famous Temple of Dionysus, the theatre which has a capacity of around , the agora, the city walls, the remnants of the port, the bouleuterion, and the gymnasium.

In the port, which acted as a naval base in Ottoman times, a castle built in has survived to our day. Teos was the only city where artists lived autonomously in the Hellenistic period. There are Hellenistic and Roman period monuments in the ancient city of Teos that was one of the 12 Ionian settlements in Archaic Age and that had colonies like the other Ionian settlements.
