The proof is later checked and, if necessary, amended - changed - to become the Official Hansard. Hansard also produces transcripts of special events, again using the recorded audio. These events include lectures, speeches and press conferences.

Hansard is named after the family of printers and publishers who produced the record of British parliamentary debates from to Up until the late 18th century it was illegal to report what was said in either the House of Commons or the House of Lords, although a record of the decisions made by the British Parliament was available to the public.

It was thought that parliamentary debates should be kept private so that members of parliament would not be overly influenced by the opinions of their constituents.

Today, public scrutiny - close examination - of the Parliament is seen as an important part of our democracy. Hansard reporters sit at the table of the house to take their report for 10 minutes as part of a running roster.

It takes the reporter about an hour to transcribe and edit that portion of debates. Reporters use either a computer-aided transcription shorthand machine that translates directly into the written word, or dictate from the audio recording creating text using voice recognition technology.

Shorthand reporters are capable of writing between and words a minute. Hansard Reporting Services is also responsible for broadcasting parliamentary proceedings. Proceedings are broadcast throughout the parliamentary precinct, to ministerial offices and via web streaming and are available through the Watch and Listen page on this website.
